THE LIFE OF SHIREL ATTAR REMEMBERED IN EMOTIONAL MEMORIAL

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010 – Students and staff gathered in the cafeteria of Marymount Academy in N.D.G.  September 22 to hold a solemn memorial for Shirel Attar, a former student who was tragically murdered on August 9 at her home in Côte Saint Luc.

The late Attar, who was only 14 years old, was honoured through moving renditions of songs like “Tears in Heaven” and “You Raise Me Up” by the Marymount Choir, as well as choice poetry, a candle lighting,  solemn words by friends at the school who knew her best and a moment of silence.

Darragh Kilkenny-Mondoux, a student representative from Leave Out Violence (LOVE)  read out a  poem she wrote for Shirel: “We’re not as bright without her, we’re not today what we were before. We’re not burning quite so brightly, but we’re still warm in our core. Because stars don’t simply disappear, they don’t die, they only shift. They’re not burning anymore, but they’re still there and they’re still a gift. 800 stars are brighter because they have another star inside, a star that isn’t burning now, but a star burns so bright.”

The ceremony concluded with the dedication of a memorial tree and the reading of Mary Elizabeth Frye’s  Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep  by Marymount Academy’s Spiritual and Community Animator Erico Santos: “Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.  When you awaken in the morning's hush; I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.”

Shirel’s mother, sister and aunt were on hand. So was Debra Michael, the vice-principal of Jewish People’s and Peretz Schools (JPPS) where Shirel attended elementary school.
