MONTREAL, DECEMBER 15, 2010 –In the wake of the tragic murder in Texas of a former Gardenview Elementary School student, Deyan Perisic and the shooting of his sister, Danyela, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) Traumatic Event Support Team was on site at the St. Laurent school all day. Some members will return on Thursday.
Danyela is presently in stable condition in a Houston hospital. Her mother is by her side. Deyan and Danyela were in Grades 4 and 6 respectively last year in Gardenview, the EMSB’s largest elementary school.
The EMSB Traumatic Event Support Team was onsite at Gardenview today, visiting all Grades 4, 5 and 6 classrooms to help students and staff cope with the tragedy and to provide them with tools to deal with the impact of the event.
Principal Tina Lavranos and Vice-Principal Sandre Leveillé, working with the Traumatic Event Support Team, also sent a letter home with parents, encouraging them to discuss the situation with their children. Since children react in different ways to an event of this nature, they recommended parents listen to their concerns and thoughts on the issue.
The letter warns parents to look out for certain things such as a change in sleeping or eating habits, extreme moodiness and irritability, loss of interest in child’s activities/hobbies, inability to concentrate, episodes of crying that do not seem to subside or uncharacteristic desire to be alone for extended periods of time.
Details regarding memorial services for Deyan and methods to send get well wishes to Danyela will be announced once details become available.
