MONTREAL, DECEMBER 20, 2010 – Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent and its Home and School Association are undertaking multiple efforts to honour the memory of former student Deyan Perisic, as well as provide aid and comfort to the Perisic family in their time of need.
Deyan, who would have been in Grade 5 this year, was killed last week in a shooting in Texas. His older sister Danyela was also shot and is presently recovering in hospital. Their father has been charged with murder.
The Gardenview Home and School Association has launched a fundraising campaign in order to ease the heavy costs associated with the tragedy, which include helping with the medical bills for Danyela Perisic as well as the costs associated with moving back to Montreal.
Individuals who wish to contribute can mail a cheque to Gardenview Elementary School (700 Brunet Street, St. Laurent, H4M 1Y2). The cheque should be sent to the attention of Home & School - "Donation for Deyan & Danyela” and payable to the Gardenview Enrichment Fund.
On Monday, December 20 the school organized a small vigil (see video) in the schoolyard in honour of Deyan. Family, friends staff and current students were on hand to hear a few words of thought and prayer as well as release balloons into the sky following a moment of silence.
“We come together, a gathering of teachers, friends and mourners to honour Deyan,” said one family friend at the memorial event. “Whether your life was here for a moment, hours or years, we remember, forever. You live in our hearts in heaven an angel, a guardian shaping our thoughts and lives.”
A school-wide memorial service is planned for early January.
