MONTREAL, JANUARY 6, 2011 – Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard is setting a lofty goal of raising more than $75,000 for cancer research as they prepare to once again team up with the Canadian Cancer Society and host a Relay for Life walk in May.

As the only high school on the island of Montreal organizing such an event, Laurier Macdonald is actively seeking participation from across the English Montreal School Board. With the goal of beating last year’s fundraising total of $50,000, students, teachers and all staff are invited to participate and help raise funds for the worthy cause.

Taking place on the track outside of the school, the Relay for Life features a 12-hour overnight walk, symbolizing how cancer never sleeps. Throughout the night, various teams of individuals walk or run around the track, which is highlighted by the Survivors’ Victory Lap for those who won their battle against cancer. Additionally, luminaries are lit at twilight for the Luminary Ceremony. When not walking, teams have access to a tent village as well as various other activities and entertainment through the night.

All proceeds from the event go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to eradicate cancer and improve the quality of life of those affected by cancer. To fulfill its mission, the Canadian Cancer Society depends on the generous donations of companies as well as individuals. The Relay for Life is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.

One can demonstrate their commitment to the community by supporting the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life at Laurier Macdonald High School by: becoming a team captain and recruiting 10 members to participate in the event; join a team, raise at least $100 and walk as a participant; become one of the sponsors for the event; be a part of the Survivor’s Victory Lap at 7:00 pm; or be a part of the organizing committee for the Relay For Life.
