MONTREAL, JANUARY 18 , 2011 – The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) is planning different activities for Public School Education Month in January, with some activities also scheduled for February.
Public School Education Month encourages prominent graduates to return to visit their neighbourhood schools to talk to students about the role public school education played in leading them to their present-day success. These individuals now serve as outstanding role models, as do many other prominent Quebecers having or having had a link with area public schools or vocational centres. Other high profile products of the public education system are also invited to visit different schools while different special events and programs are highlighted as well.
Here are some preliminary highlights.
-On Wednesday, January 19 (10 a.m.) Danny Maciocia will return to Dante Elementary School (6090 Lachenaie) in St. Léonard. Maciocia, who also attended Laurier Macdonald High School, is the newly appointed head coach of the Université de Montréal Carabins. He was previously the head coach and general manager of the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos and one-time assistant coach with the Montreal Alouettes. In 2005, as the first Quebec-born head coach in CFL history, Maciocia guided the Edmonton Eskimos to a victory in the 93rd Grey Cup.
-Also on Wednesday, January 19 (11 a.m.) Shaun Starr from THE TEAM 990 all-sports radio station will return to Parkdale Elementary School (1475 Deguire) in St. Laurent. Starr, who also attended LaurenHill Academy, is a sportcaster and co-host of THE TEAM 990 morning show. In addition, he does colour commentary on live broadcasts for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Montreal Juniors.
-On Tuesday, January 25 (11 a.m.) legendary broadcaster Bill Haugland will return to Willingdon Elementary School (5870 Terrebonne) in N.D.G. Haugland began his television career at CFCF TV (now CTV Montreal and Radio in 1961 as a news reporter/writer. He also had stints as a public relations officer for the former Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (PSBGM) and an announcer for CJAD Radio. In 1977 he began working full-time for the supper hour and late night CFCF TV news as a reporter and longtime anchor/co-anchor, retiring in 2007. CTV Montreal. T.V. news anchorman/journalist. He also hosted some current affairs programs and even had some cameo-roles in more than a dozen Hollywood motion-pictures which filmed in Montreal.
-Also on Tuesday, January 25 (9:30 a.m.) Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary School (314 Northview) in Montreal West will welcome back alumnus Theodore Fairhurst, who recently realized a lifelong goal when he celebrated his 63rd birthday on Mount Everest. Fairhurst brings a positive message for both students and staff, challenging them to Dare to Reach, a saying he has adopted which empowers himself and his audiences with the knowledge that they decide where they want to go and who they want to become. Fairhurst continues to live by his credo on a daily basis, as by the end of 2011, he hopes to have climbed the highest peak on every continent.
- Also on Tuesday, January 25 (9:30 a.m.) Andre Michalopoulos, founder of Andion Financial, will bring his incredible success story back to Rosemount High School (3737 Beaubien East). As a student at the Technical Centre, Michalopoulos developed a background in mechanics which landed him a position in the aerospace industry. When an unfortunate setback pushed him out of the industry, Michalopoulos took the risk to pursue his dream as an entrepreneur. At 23 years old, he started his first business in Ottawa, Ontario, and successfully built it for the next six years. In 1988, he took a position at New York Life Insurance where he was a member of its Executive Council, and was awarded a position at the Million Dollar Round Table, an elite club open only to the best advisors. Three years later, Michalopoulos became an independent investment, insurance, and business consultant where he worked tirelessly to guide local business and communities. His life-long dedication to the industry finally translated into Andion Financial in 2006, a corporation which is set on providing clients with a "one-stop-shop" for all their financial needs, shaping personal and business visions into reality.
- On Monday, January 31 (10:00 a.m.) Robert Capalbo, founder of Total Shred, a personalized shredding service, will return to John F. Kennedy High School (3030 Villeray) in St. Michel to offer his sage advice to the Grade 10 entrepreneurship students. After graduating from JFK in 1982, Capalbo pursued an education in Health Sciences before a chance evening opened up his mind to establishing his own business. While sitting with a friend in 1990, the idea popped into their heads to bring the revolutionary shredding business to Montreal, having been started just one year earlier in Toronto. After more than a decade of success with his partner, Capalbo decided to venture out on his own and establish Total Shred in 2003. With a rock solid knowledge of the business, Total Shred has seen steady growth; ensuring Capalbo will remain an industry leader for years to come.
- On Thursday, February 17 (11:40 a.m.) CJAD newscaster Andrew Peplowski will speak to students at the LaurenHill Academy Junior Campus (2505 Cote Vertu) in St. Laurent about journalism. Peplowski attended Father MacDonald High School, which closed in 1999. It was at that time the EMSB converted the building to a Junior Campus for LaurenHill. Peplowski has also worked in television with Global and CTV and worked for the old CFCF Radio
A number of other guests will be announced soon.
Public School Education Month precedes Kindergarten Registration Week, which is February 7 to 11, 2011. Besides traditional print, radio and television advertisements, the EMSB will be engaging in its first-ever social media marketing campaign. Part of this will be in partnership with the Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA), the details of which will be unveiled at a January 24 press conference at the Rialto Theatre while the Facebook platform will also be utilized.
