|MONTREAL ALOUETTES PRESIDENT LARRY SMITH TO ADDRESS OPTIONS II STUDENTS MARCH 12TH|
MONTREAL, MARCH 2, 2001- Montreal Alouettes President Larry Smith will visit Options II High School (1741 de Biencourt) in Ville Emard on Monday March 12 at 10:30 a.m. in his capacity as president of the Success for Youth Foundation.
Options II is part of the English Montreal School Board’s outreach secondary network, geared towards students who feel out of place in large high schools. These pupils do not succeed academically in a traditional setting. Options II has 105 students, many of whom come to school hungry. The Success for Youth Foundation has issued a grant of $4,950 to the school which will be used to purchase snacks for the students and help pay for tutoring.
"Many of our students live on their own without parental support or proper nourishment," says Options II Head Teacher Edith Coleman. "Thanks to organizations like the Success for Youth Foundation we have seen an improvement in student attendance, the kids focus better in class and those who are being tutored are showing a marked improvement academically."
Ms. Coleman says she is excited about Mr. Smith’s upcoming visit, noting that he represents an excellent role model for the students. Mr. Smith played football professionally, got his law degree and served as commissioner of the Canadian Football League before taking over the helm of the Alouettes and reviving the pro game in this city.
