ST. RAPHAEL STUDENTS HELP TEACHER CONQUER CANCER

Repercussion Theatre

MONTREAL, APRIL 12, 2011When St. Raphael’s Carlos dos Santos takes part in this summer’s Ride to Conquer Cancer, he will leave his Carbon Fibre at home and be riding on the man power of his students, using a bicycle built for him at St. Raphael, by St. Raphael’s own. With the race only a few weeks away, Santos will officially be presented with his bicycle on April 15th at 10:00 am at St. Raphael Centre (8735 Henri-Julien) in Ahuntsic.

In order to help Santos realize his fundraising goal of $3,500, St. Raphael Centre will also be using the event to kick-off their fundraising efforts by raffling off two tickets to the Lion King and a set of Espresso cups. Tickets are $10 each, while three can be purchased for $20.

“When we started the bicycle project I never thought that one of our teachers would volunteer to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer and that the bike would be built by our students in our new bike shop,” said Harold Penn, principal of St. Raphael Centre. “Students with special needs have worked very hard to get the bike ready and the entire school has gotten behind the project. I am very proud of all the students, volunteers and the teachers who have helped to make this project such a success.”

To help Carlos dos Santos reach his goal, please visit www.conquercancer.ca. Santos’ rider number is: 351530-1. St. Raphael Centre is also collecting cheques on behalf of Santos. Donations made out to “St. Raphael Centre” can be mailed to: St. Raphael Centre, 8735 Henri-Julien Street, Montreal, QC, H2M 1M5. A tax receipt will be sent to all donors.

Operated under the expert guise of volunteer bicycle pro David Gnehm, over the course of the past few months, more than a dozen students have participated in the school’s Bicycle Repair program and have learned the ins-and-outs of how to build and repair bicycles. Almost entirely based on donations, upon completion, the program will also enable students to receive a certificate allowing them to seek work in a bicycle repair shop.
