MONTREAL, APRIL 2, 2001— General Vanier Elementary School (4555 Buies) in Saint Leonard will hold its formal inauguration on Wednesday April 4, with special activities planned throughout the day and evening.

The school officially opened last August to accommodate the growing number of students in the Saint Leonard area. Each of the three other English Montreal School Board (EMSB) primary institutions in the district were bursting at the seams. For this first year of operation General Vanier has been catering to 227 pupils from kindergarten to Grade 5. A Grade 6 stream will be added next year.

Wednesday’s inauguration will feature the opening of the new school library and the introduction of library technician Demetra Mallios. Proceedings will get underway at 1:30 p.m. with Patricia Crighton, a female district commander for the Canadian Legion, addressing students about the man their school is named after. General Georges Vanier served as Governor General of Canada from 1959 to 1967. At 2:45 p.m. students will learn which of the 12 submissions for the logo was selected. The winner will be invited to unveil the logo.

A small reception is then planned, organized by parents and sponsored by the two local McDonald’s franchises. In the evening, another inauguration ceremony will be held for parents, dignitaries and school board officials.
