LAURIER MACDONALD HIGH SCHOOL RAISES MORE THAN $93,000 FOR RELAY OF LIFE CANCER RESEARCH EVENT

MONTREAL, MAY 19, 2011--- Laurier Macdonald High School in St.  Léonard, in collaboration with the Canadian Cancer Society, organized a Relay for Life (Cancer Walk) for all types of cancers and raised a record  of more than $93,000 for Quebec and Canadian senior high schools (Secondary III to V).

This was the second collaboration with the Canadian Cancer Society. Laurier Macdonald was the only high school in all of Montreal to host such an event. This much-anticipated community fundraiser was coordinated by Laurier Macdonald students, under the supervision  of Spiritual Community Animator Vince Lacroce.

The Laurier Macdonald Relay for Lifewas an opportunity to get together with family and friends to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease. What made this event so special was that was a non-competitive 12-hour overnight relay that commenced at 7 p.m. and ended at 7 a.m. Cancer survivors walked a very emotional victory lap in front 800 participants,  presenting to the world that they are determined to beat cancer. At 10 p.m., a luminary ceremony lit the night sky acknowledging the determination of cancer surviviors as well as paying homage to the loss of a close friends. Entertainment, live music, disc jockeys and Zumba filled the night sky.

CTV News reporter Tania Krywiak  was the honourary master  of ceremony that evening. Liberal MP Massimo Pacetti, Liberal MNA Filomena Rotiroti, EMSB Deputy Director General  Roma Medwid and  Commissioner Frank Di Cesare were also present to demonstrate their support.   The Secondary IV “Don’t stop Believing Team” set a Canadian record by raising the most amount of money ever with $14, 256.65 for the cause. Mr. Lacroce wishes to extend a special thank you to the organizing committee, numerous sponsors and the tireless effort by the students and staff members for a fantastic and memorable evening.
