MONTREAL, SEPTEMBER 6, 2011 – Taking advantage of the progressive-entry system for the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, Parkdale Elementary School in St. Laurent and the local Centre de santé et de services sociaux (CSSS) teamed up last week to provide new parents with an information workshop concerning health, nutrition, parenting and good habits.
The program, called 5 out of 5, was held for three separate groups of parents over the first three days of the school year. In addition to making parents aware of important health and nutritional information, the school used the opportunity to ensure that parents understood the expectations for their children at Parkdale and what can be done at home to guarantee success throughout the school year.
To set an example for parents, following the session, they were treated to a healthy snack which was donated by the CSSS. The snack is of the same variety which the school expects each student to bring for lunch on a daily basis.
Beginning with the 2011–2012 academic year, Parkdale has also been named a Community Learning Centre (CLC). This distinction will allow the school to offer monthly health and nutrition workshops for parents, which will also be made available to our other CLC schools across Quebec through a state-of-the-art video conference room.
