Mary Gordon, founder and president of Roots of Empathy (ROE), was at the EMSB's Westmount Park Elementary School to honour the babies and parents that have spent the last 10 months in local classrooms helping children develop emotional literacy and empathy for others. Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that reduces levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. There are currently 23 classrooms involving approximately 575 students in Quebec that are participating in Roots of Empathy programs. In addition to Westmount Park, the program is also active at Roslyn Elementary in Westmount. Pictured left to right are: Mary Gordon, Tim Broadhead from the McConnell Family Foundation (holding 11 month old Ethen Goldstein), Westmount Park Principal Gail Somerville and Roots of Empathy provincial coordinator Stephanie Dupont (holding year old Aviva Raquel Ben Sabat). In the photo at the left, Ethen and Aviva play on a mat while EMSB and program officials look on.
