Principal's honour roll
Each term, the names of those students who havedistinguished themselves through their grades will be placed on the Honour Roll. Certificate ceremonies will take place to recognize those students who have achieved Gold(90%), Silver(80%) and Bronze(70%).

Improvement certificate
Students who improve their third term average by 10% or more from the first term’s results will also be recognized.

Promotion policy
Students who improve their third term average by 10% or more from the first term’s results will also be recognized. For promotion from Secondary IV to Secondary V A student is promoted to Secondary V on an individual subject basis when the 60% pass mark is attained.

Graduation requirements
As of 1996-97 all secondary school students are subject to the new certification which in out line involves the following: The student will accumulate 1 to 6 credits for each course in which he/she is successful (60% or more) in Secondary IV and V. A diploma in Secondary Studies will be awarded to those students who have accumulated a total of 54 credits in Secondary IV and V, including the mandatory credits listed below :

Reports
In addition to a progress report card in October, formal computerized reports will be issued three times during the year. There will be opportunities for parents to come to the school to meet with the teachers of their children when report cards are issued.

Physical Education
This course is obligatory from Secondary I to Secondary V. The required dress for all the gym classes is t-shirt, shorts or sweat pants, running shoes. Valuables should be secured in gym offices during gym class. A medical certificate is required to excuse a student from participation in physical education activities, but no student may be totally exempted from physical education.

Why is homework assigned?

  • to make sure that you really understand what you have been taught;
  • to develop the skills necessary for each subject;
  • to develop productive work and study habits;
  • to develop concentration and organization skills;
  • to develop a sense of responsibility towards yourself and others;
  • to prepare you to face the demands of real life and the world of work.

How much homework should I get?
If you are in Secondary I or II you should get approximately 1 ½ hours each day, this means an average of 15 minutes per subject.
If you are in Secondary III, IV V, you should get approximately 2 ½ hours each school day, this implies 25 minutes per subject.

Guidance
The guidance department is equipped to provide a full range of personal, academic and career counselling services. Appointments may be made at the Guidance office outside class hours. The student must show the appointment slip when leaving and returning to class.

Health services
A Public Health Nurse is provided by The English Montreal School Board for one day a week. The nurse cannot prescribe medication. Students cannot be dismissed by the nurse.
This must be done at the school office on the recommendation of the Health Service. It is essential that the school be informed of the telephone numbers of parents or relatives to be reached in case of an emergency. (On Registration form).

Consultations
An invitation is extended to the parents of James Lyng High School students to consult with the teachers, student services personnel, and the administration at convenient times during school hours. Appointments are to be made by telephone 846-8814.

Library
The library is intended to be a resource area for the whole school. You are encouraged to use the library to do your homework and study; to read for pleasure; and to do research. There is a wide variety of books and magazines as well as computers with access to Internet available to you. In order to keep the library operating efficiently, you are asked to observe the following regulations:

  1. The library opens each morning at 8:00 a.m. and remains open each day until 3:30 in the afternoon.
  2. No food or beverages are allowed in the library. “ MP3/ ipod ” type devices are not allowed in the library. Students are required to leave their schoolbags and other belongings on the tables at the entrance.
  3. Individuals or small groups are permitted to use the library throughout the school day with written permission from their teacher.
  4. Students are free to checkout books from the library for a period of two weeks. If the book is not returned on the due date, 5 cents a day fine will be imposed for the overdue book. If no one else has reserved the book, the book may be renewed at the end of the two week loan period.
  5. Borrowers are held responsible for the replacement costs of any library book damaged or lost.
  6. Students who want to spend their lunch hour in the library for serious and quiet work may do so with their pass.
  7. Do not disturb other students who need a quiet environment in which to study.

Cafeteria
The cafeteria serves both hot and cold balanced meals. No purchase is required to eat in the cafeteria. Students must conduct themselves properly and must clean their tables after eating. Any student failing to do so will be refused the use of the cafeteria facilities. No eating allowed outside of the cafeteria.

Breakfast Program
All students are invited to enjoy our free breakfast in the cafeteria between 7:50 and 8:10am each day.

Textbooks
These are loaned free of charge to the pupils. The textbooks are the property of the School Commission, and must be treated with proper care. STUDENTS MUST PAY REPLACEMENT COST FOR LOST, STOLEN, OR DAMAGED TEXTBOOKS.

Lost articles
Valuables or large amounts of money should never be brought to school. Lost and found articles should be reported to or redeemed from the secretary.


Student ID and OPUS cards
Bus pass & I.D. photos have been taken for the year 2011/2012, however parents may download the form for OPUS card replacements from the STM website.

Student behaviour
The community of James Lyng requires that students demonstrate self-respect as well as respect for the dignity, well-being and property of other members of the school. Therefore students must accept their responsibilities which among others, are to:

  • Be polite at all times;
  • Use proper language;
  • Be on time for all classes and activities;
  • Hand in assignments on time;
  • Have books and supplies ready;
  • Keep their locker, desk and school clean;
  • Obey all school rules;
  • Show proper social behavior with the opposite sex.

Disciplinary action
Students who fail in their responsibility to their school community are accountable for their behaviour. The following are examples of unacceptable behaviour that requires disciplinary linary action :

  • Rudeness
  • Lateness
  • Assignments not done
  • No text(s), pen, or copybooks in class
  • Rowdiness in class, hallways, cafeteria
  • Littering
  • Eating anywhere in the building except in the cafeteria
  • Unacceptable dress and appearance
  • Fighting
  • Vandalism
  • Foul language
  • Insubordination
  • Graffiti

Forms of disciplinary action
Detention : Students found breaking rules will service a detention outside regular school hours. Suspension : Chronic or serious cases of misconduct will bring out a suspension. All suspensions will require parent interviews with the administration for readmission.

Student appearance
Students must arrive in uniform to the school. The school uniform must be worn throughout every day – in class, during recess, during lunch, and on school outings. Non-dress code clothing and accessories are prohibited at all times during the school day – Items including, but not limited to : Excessive makeup or nail polish (eg. such as Goth), head bands and bandanas, hats, jackets, school bags, sun glasses, excessive jewellery, sweat bands, wallet chains, walkmans, cell phones, pagers, etc. must be stored in student ’ s locker. Student Supervisors
Students must comply with supervisors’s requests. Failure to treat the monitors with courtesy and respect will lead to disciplinary action.

Care of school property

  • It is the RESPONSIBILITY of each student to help keep the school building neat and clean.
  • The cost of wilful damage to school property will be borne by the parents.
  • Vandalism will be reported to the School Board and pursued by the Legal Department.

Smoking
No smoking is permitted in the building or on school premises. Students caught smoking on school property will be immediately suspended..

Drugs & Alcohol
No Drugs or alcohol are permitted on school premises. Students caught with any of these substances wil be immediately suspended. Suspicion of drug possession and/or use is also a suspendable offence.

Attendance
The Education Act states that there is compulsory schooling for all students until the end of the school year in which the student turns sixteen. The law demands that every student attend school every day. If a student is absent he/she must bring a note before he/she is readmitted. The note must :

  • be dated;
  • indicate the student’s homeroom number;
  • indicate the exact date(s) for absence;
  • give a valid reason for absence;
  • indicate a telephone number where a parent can be reached during the day;
  • be signed by a parent.

The note must be given to the OFFICE secretary.

Early Dismissal
Parents are requested to arrange medical, dental and other appointments for their children outside school hours, that is, after 3 :30 p.m. or on school holidays. Any dismissal before 3 :22 p.m. must be requested by a note. The note must be brought to the office before 8:35 a.m. and must :

  • be dated and give student’s homeroom;
  • give a valid reason;
  • specify the time the student has to leave;
  • indicate a telephone number where the parent can be reached during the day;
  • be signed by the parent.
EARLY DISMISSALS BY TELEPHONE MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED.
An Early Dismissal Slip will then be issued to the student at recess. This slip must be retained and shown on demand.

If this procedure is not followed, the student will not be granted an early dismissal. Students who become ill during the regular school day MUST REPORT to the office.
NO STUDENT MAY LEAVE THE SCHOOL DURING SCHOOL HOURS WIHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE ADMINISTRATION. STUDENTS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES WILL BE ISSUED A DETENTION.

Lates
Students who report to class after 8:35 a.m. are late and must obtain a late slip from the office and serve a detention. Student are also expected to be on time for their classes throughout the day. The subject teachers will deal with lateness. Chronic cases will be referred to the administration.

Student Movement
Students may enter the building at 7:50a.m. After the bell, students must bring all materials for the next two periods. The same after the recess and lunch bells. During the lunch period, students are permitted only in designated areas. Students must have a pass in order to be in other areas of the building. Students must have a hall pass when not in class.

Fire drills

  • Each exit in the school is clearly marked.
  • Instructions are provided in each classroom to designate which exit to use.
  • The sound of the fire alarm is the signal to leave the building immediately by the designated exit.
  • Fire drills can take place at any time, whether the students are in classes, in gym, in assemblies, in the corridors or in the cafeteria.
Fire drill code
  • Every fire drill is to be regarded as a real fire.
  • Students must leave the building immediately during a fire drill.
  • Students must move rapidly and maintain silence and good order.

DO NOT RUN.TO TURN IN A FALSE ALARM IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE.

Wednesday afternoons
Wednesdays are mini days. Classes end at 12:45 p.m. There are no periods 5 or 6 for students on Wednesday afternoons.

Parking
There is no parking available for students on school grounds.

Accident Insurance
This is a responsibility assumed by the parents. The School Board endorses an accident insurance plan which your child will bring home. All students participating in intramural or interscholastic activities must have some form of insurance. Please note that emergency ambulance service which is not provided by the school is covered by this insurance.
