Unicorn Children's Foundation The Unicorn Foundation was founded in 1995 by the American doctor, Mark Rosenbloom, as a response to the limited resources available to children with communication disorders. The organization's philosophy is that every child with any learning or communication challenge of any severity can be reached and helped. The Foundation therefore supports projects, in any geographical region, that give children the greatest opportunity to reach their potential. Dr. Yvette Hus, speech-language-pathologist with a special interest in students with literacy challenges, was instrumental in requesting grants for establishing reading resource rooms at J.F. Kennedy, James Lyng, and FACE high schools. The Unicorn foundation generously contributed $1500 to each school. The donation will be used to purchase materials including assistive technology for students with serious learning and reading difficulties. The rooms will also serve as staff resource and information centres for developing cross-curricular literacy programs. The foundation's generosity spawned an avalanche of literacy enhancing activities. A team of talented of JFK students, headed by the art and dance teacher Barbara Gales, painted an awe-inspiring replica of the foundation's emblem, the mythical unicorn, on the room's outer wall. In addition, a pocket-book collection program was initiated. Staff members are encouraged to fill the pocket-book basket, placed in front of the resource room, for students and staff to take away. |
