Silicate Gardens

Synthesized by LHA students: groups 534-01,02,03

Crystals of cobalt nitrate and copper nitrate were added to a solution of sodium silicate(Na2Si2O7(aq)). A new silicate forms with each transition metal ion. Cobalt leads to purple compounds; copper form blue crystals. As the air trapped within each crystal moves towards the top of the beaker, it expands the new silicate into a staglamite-like structure.
