Gilgamesh the King

By Ludmila Zeman

This story takes place in the land between two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. The land is called Mesopotamia.

The legend of Gilgamesh goes like this: He is half-god and half-man. Gilgamesh is not liked by many. To impress the people of his city, King Gilgamesh orders a wall to be built by them. The people get so tired of building that they cry for help to the Sun God.

Enkidu, a beast, who is also considered to be the strongest man in the world, is sent to earth to help by showing Gilgamesh what the meaning of friendship is by falling in love with a human.

The illustrations in the book are beautiful, and so are the colors that were chosen. The chariots, temples, columns in the temples, rivers, boats and the costumes of the characters give us the feeling that we are back in the ancient lands, thousands of years ago.
