Science & Technology
Starting in kindergarten, all students at Merton school have the opportunity to explore the world of technology. This year our lab consists of 19 new Mac computers. A portable lab consisting of five mac laptops is also available for all classes to use. In addition, the technology lab is equipped with a black and white printer and scanner. Two digital cameras, a video camera and a tripod are also found within the technology lab.
Cycle two and three students also receive a forty-five minute period dedicated to the world of science. Topics concerning Earth and Space, The Material World and Living Things are all integrated within the curriculum. The science curriculum is integrated within all technology assignmets and activities.
Cycle one students receive one period a week designated to the world of Science and Technology. Students use word processors, drawings softwares, cameras and scanner within their science based assignments.

Robotics
Welcome to the world of Robotics!
Once a week for forty-five minutes, cycle two and three students engage in hands on building exercises that enable them to work as a team to design and build simple machines.
Cycle two students learn about the six simple machines and work together to create everyday simple machines using our introductory robotics kits.
Cycle three students work as a team to design, build and program robots based on the Lego Mindstorms activities.
In addition, selected students from both cycle two and three work separately on designing, creating and programming robots to fit the rules of the RoboCup Dance competition during our after school robotics workshops. Both RCX and NXT kits are used.
Physical Education
Merton has a very unique physical education teacher and program. Amongst cooperative games and team sports, the physical education teacher competed in the olympics. He brings with him a vast array of skills in kinistetics and circus abilities. He prepares students for an end of the year circus performance. Drama
Cycle one students are lucky enough to have drama classes once a week. Children learn to be expressive and build their self-esteem and communication skills through various activities.
Music
Merton offers a comprehensive music program that provides students from Pre-K to Grade 6 opportunities to invent, interpret, and appreciate a variety of musical genres from around the world. Students receive instruction incorporating music theory, basic music literacy, and hands-on performance skills on xylophone, soprano recorder, voice, West African djembes, and a variety of other percussion instruments. Instruction on guitar is offered as an after-school enrichment program. All students perform in two annual school concerts. The Merton school band performs annually at the EMSB Music Festival held every spring.
Currently enjoying his eighth year teaching at Merton, our music teacher, David Eves has recently completed his M.A. in Music Education through the University of Victoria.
