Professional
Development
The importance of learning communities in our classrooms
and the need to create life-long learners is widely acknowledged.
Educators have a professional responsibility to model this very
behaviour.
A critical responsibility of the Pedagogical Services
Department is to promote professional
development. This can be accomplished by direct support to schools,
both to individual teachers and administrators,
as well as by organizing large-scale events to address the needs
of specific groups or the system at large.
It is important that the Department anticipate educational innovations
so that all concerned can be informed and better
prepared. A good example is the implementation of Curriculum
Reform at the secondary level. The consultants
have been working with the various schools to further their understanding
of reform and to facilitate planning as
we enter this next phase. It is the schools' responsibility to
call upon the Department
for assistance or information to address
their own professional needs and to support the professional development
plan of the school.
The primary role of the consultant is to assist teachers in their
classrooms. Teachers are welcome to initiate professional interaction
with the consultants by seeking their assistance whenever the need
arises, and should feel free to take advantage
of this service.
