Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to be involved in many different sports and extra-curricular activities. As an adult athlete, I experience the first-hand psychological, social and physical benefits of living an active lifestyle that began at a very young age. Participation in sports and living healthier can play a positive role in youth development that often results in improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems. It can act as a necessary outlet for many students and it can create opportunities for important social connections throughout all stages of life. Increased screen-time and less active play among children have led to significant declines in mental wellness and overall health. As an example: diabetes is now an epidemic and incidences of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are increasing. Changing one’s lifestyle to encompass healthy eating and daily exercise has been proven to prevent diabetes by over 60 percent.
To support health and wellness programs in schools, I have embarked on an initiative to offer a grant of $1,000 grant to one elementary school and $1,000 to one high school in need of support to launch a physical activity or wellness related project. I am undertaking various fundraising activities to raise the money.
