| Location St. Gabriel is located on Dublin Street between Wellington and Hall, and serves the Pointe-Saint-Charles district. Students can take the #57 bus to school from the Charlevoix Metro, or can take a ten-minute walk from the LaSalle Metro. The school is also accessible via the #61 bus. History St. Gabriel School has been around since the 1920s. The current building was built in 1973. There have been English speaking people in Point St. Charles for a long time, and now they make up about 31% of the area's population. Some of our students have ancestors who came from Ireland. The school has students from many nationalities and cultures. We love learning from one another's cultures. Our Values A sense of self-confidence, self-respect, as well as respect for others. To incorporate each of these values into every aspect of our students’ school life. Children are expected to behave in a manner that will prepare them to become responsible adults. With this concept in mind, students will be expected to show a sense of responsibility and will be held accountable, in a positive manner, for the consequences of their actions. Philosophy The school’s objective is to provide the best possible education for its students, while respecting the rights of children from all religions, cultures, backgrounds, and walks of life. St Gabriel blends a multi-cultural environment with an Irish tradition to welcome youngsters from all walks of life. Distinctive Programs St. Gabriel's has just begun implementing the Second Step program which focuses on social skills and violence prevention. It emphasizes empathy, impulse control, problem solving and anger management. We hope that this will help us build an even more respectful and nurturing environment in which all students can learn and flourish. Thanks to funding from the Inner City Operational Renewal and Supporting Montreal Schools programs, St. Gabriel offers its students an extensive Music program, Speech and Language support, social aid support, and a variety of other programs. The school has a close involvement with community organizations such as the local YMCA and St Columba House. The school offers the French as a Second Language Core Programme. In addition, there is a remediation program to help reduce class size, and extra assistance is provided when needed in the areas of speech therapy, social adjustment, and psychological support. On January 17, 2005, St. Gabriel School was saved from closing, when the English Montreal School Board decided to keep this great school open. We had a lot of support from a committed group of parents. We also had lots of support from the local English and French communities. Over 1,000 signatures were collected on a community petition to keep the school open and over 30 letters of support were obtained from local community groups, churches, schools and politicians who felt St. Gabriel plays an important role as the only remaining English-language school in Point St. Charles. |
