Academic Support

RESOURCE TEACHERS

Support is provided by our resource teachers in both French and English to students who are experiencing learning difficulties in a particular area or who are considered to be at-risk learners. Resource may take place within the classroom setting and/or through pull-out model. Students benefiting from resource support have an I.E.P. (individualized educational plan) prepared for them, in order for students to reach their fullest potential at their own pace.

Extra support is provided for students in cycle 1 (grade 1 and 2) in particular, with emphasis on languages and literacy.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT FOR OUT-OF-PROVINCE STUDENTS

Pierre Elliott Trudeau school provides French language support for out-of-province students. Specialized tutors provide support to small groups of students and one-to-one learning sessions. This service is offered free of charge to eligible students.

HOMEWORK SUPERVISION

Homework supervision is provided to elementary school students enrolled in the B.A.S.E. Daycare Program.

ONLINE LEARNING TOOLS AND HOMEWORK HELP

All students and families have access to free online learning tools which provides e-learning resources for reading and literacy, mathematics, languages, online tutoring and homework help for all grade levels. A username and password is provided by your child's teacher.

ALTERNATIVE RESOURCE MODEL

The acceleration model at Pierre Elliott Trudeau School emulates the program described by Suzy Pepper Rollins in her book, Learning in the Fast Lane. We have created a support structure for students who don’t have the background or prior knowledge needed to successfully complete the material being covered in class.

Acceleration is scaffolding for new learning. It is previewing, not pre-teaching. It helps activate thinking and builds background knowledge. It also provides the vocabulary that students need in order to understand the new concepts and skills before the lesson is taught.

This model appears to be addressing the root cause of their academic struggles –the lack of prior knowledge, vocabulary and life experiences that are necessary when learning new information and skills. The results have been very positive both at the academic and social level for our students who are working below grade level.
