Carnival
Mr. J. Wright - June 17th, 2016

Dear Parents / Guardians of Dalkeith,

As you know Monday June 20, 2016 is our Carnival.  There will be outdoor games all day long including some involving water (sprinklers) so a towel and a change of clothing is recommended (You may choose to send them in with a bathing suit to CHANGE INTO should you wish).

Please note the Dalkeith Gym shirt is the ideal top for Carnival. We still have a few in stock in most sizes should you wish to purchase one please fill in the coupon on the note sent home and send it in with your $10.00 .

A lunch of hot dogs and juice will be provided (and a few other surprizes).  Should your child not care for this or has any allergies please provide his/her lunch as the last day of cafeteria service was today.

The forecast is for hot sunny skies, therefore sunscreen (applied in the morning at home) and hats are a must.

*** There is NO EXTRA COST FOR THIS ACTIVITY unless you are purchasing a T-shirt

Front Entrance
Mr. J. Wright - June 13th, 2016

Dear Parents / Guardians of Dalkeith,

This is just a little note that starting tomorrow (Tuesday, June 14th) and for the remainder of this week the Dalkeith (Horse-shoe driveway entrance) will be off limits. We are completely reconstructing the staircase in its entirety.

Bus entrance and dismissal will still be on Dalkeith Ave. but the students will simply enter and depart from the teacher’s parking lot door.

DAYCARE PARENTS: Please use either the Daycare or Goncourt Doors only.
The work should be completed by the end of the week if all goes to plan and the weather holds out.

As always, should you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact us.

Dynamix Fun Day
Mr. J. Wright - June 6th, 2016

We are very happy to be able to provide a fun day for the students on Tuesday, June 7th, 2016. The teachers, along with animators from Dynamix, will be orchestrating activities for the whole school from 9:30-12:30.
These activities are at NO COST to you (the school will be absorbing the cost of the entire activity).
Students should come to school in either their regular dress code OR their Dalkeith Gym T-shirt.
The forecast is not very promising for outdoor activities but students should come in with running shoes regardless.

N.B. Lunch recess and bussing are not affected by this activity so send them in with their lunch and snack or funds for the cafeteria as usual.

Warmer Day Reminders
Mr. J. Wright - May 31st, 2016

Just some quick reminders as it begins to feel like summer.

Refillable water bottles (With your child’s name) are permitted. These are to be filled with water only and powdered mixes are to be avoided.
The Dalkeith Gym shirt is for gym. It should not be considered a regular substitute for the polo top. Remember, a plain white T-shirt is perfectly acceptable in the warmer weather.
“Flip Flops” are great to keep cool but are NOT appropriate for running in the schoolyard nor for the hallways or stairs. Proper footwear should be considered before sending the students in in the morning.
sunPlease feel free to apply sunscreen on at home (Minimum Recommended SPF is 30) before they come into school. It should be noted that the “spray on” sunscreens are not considered to be the best as fumes that are inhaled are not at all healthy. Unfortunately, the staff cannot re-apply the lotion prior to going out nor should the younger students be permitted to apply it themselves (exception: carnival day).

Earth Day Breakfast and Clean-Up
Mr. J. Wright - April 25th, 2016

Last Friday Mother Nature did not work with us for our Earth Day Clean –Up
As such, it was rescheduled for Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 26th, 2016.

Right after recess we will meet outside for our Earth Day clean-up. Students should also come in with a pair of work/gardening gloves (a pair from the dollar store is ideal) rubber boots and/or a change of socks may also be prudent along with some work pants and a work shirt.

I Love to Read Dress-UP day
Mr. J. Wright - April 6th, 2016

Friday, April 8, 2016 will mark the end of Dalkeith’s  “I Love to Read Week” activities.  In celebration of this, it has been a Dalkeith Tradition to have a “Dress-UP Day”.
This means the students are permitted to ‘dress-up’ as their favorite storybook or literary character should they wish (they may gladly come to school in dress code as usual; it is their and your choice).

Should you choose to send them in in costume, it is important to note a few important guidelines...

Concerning Dress-up Themes:
This is not a second Halloween nor a dress-down day. It is the spirit of fostering reading and the character should be from a literary source.  Sensibility and good taste are the order of the day. As such, violent or suggestive themed costumes should be considered inappropriate (no swords, guns, etc will be permitted).

P.S. if you are looking for ideas simply ‘Google’ “Reading week costume ideas” or similar search options

Breakfast with Santa in the News
Mr. J. Wright - Dec. 15, 2015

Dalkeith's Breakfast with Santa sponsored by the Generations Foundation was a great success due in no small part the volunteerism of the parents on PPO and the generosity of Adrian and Natalie Bercovici. The event attracted many distinguished guest including former Dalkeith parent Lina Di Giovanni, owner of the St. Leonard Arctic Hockey Team. Manfred Raaber Owner of the Local Tim Horton’s. Michelle Zammit, City Councillor for Anjou. Many members of the EMSB senior management took time out to join us and they brought the guest of honour Santa. The Rosemount H.S. band lead by Ms. Best got everyone in the festive mood. Each and every student was sent home with a gift as well as some memories and a small lesson in generosity. Global news did a piece that airied last night.

What a great way to celebrate the first day of the last week.

Last week before holidays information
Mr. J. Wright - Dec. 10, 2015

Monday, December 14th, 2015: Adrian and Natalie Bercovici of the Generations Foundation will once again be sponsoring and joining us for our annual Breakfast with Santa. However, this year, they are making it extra special and have invited numerous special guests including the Rosemount H.S. Band, Jamie Orchard from Global News (who will be covering and filming the event) and, of course, Santa. Breakfast will consist of waffles and syrup, cereal, milk, fruit cups and juice. Please note, this breakfast COULD replace the snack but NOT lunch. Furthermore, this is not a dress down day but students will be permitted to wear their “Dalkeith” gym shirt in place of their polo. Sorry parents, this is a student only event.

Friday, December 18th, 2015: In addition to it being our last day of school before the holidays, it will also be holiday concert (albeit subdued from previous years). Teachers normally practice with the students tirelessly during their breaks, spend many an hour decorating the gym, etc. This year, finding time has been even more difficult with the loss of those four days. However, the teachers know how much you and the students look forward to this annual tradition and are trying to ‘pull it together’ in the limited time left. So, the show WILL go on at 10:00am.

The school will be closed until our first day back with the students on Monday, January 4th, 2016.

December 9th a Strike day
Mr. J. Wright - Dec. 2, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Following our recent message pertaining to all our unionized employees (teachers, support staff, daycare personnel, caretakers and professionals), I would like to inform you that the Board has received a mandate for an additional strike day, scheduled for next Wednesday, December 9th, 2015.

As you heard in the news, negotiations are still going strong between the various Union groups and the Ministry.  At this time we feel it prudent to inform you of this strike day now so as you will be able to make the alternate arrangements needed.
Unless an agreement is reached between now and December 9th, the strike day will take place. It should be noted that should an agreement be reached you will be so notified without delay.
There will be NO classes in all our schools on December 9th.  There will also be NO transportation nor daycare services on that day

As such, rest assured that I will keep you informed of any further development.
I thank you for your continued understanding and support during this negotiation period.

1st, 2nd, 3rd Regular School Days
Mr. J. Wright - Nov. 25, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,
You will recall that our unionized groups had voted in favor of six (6) strike days, including three (3) tentatively scheduled for December 1, 2 and 3rd.  Please note that these three (3) strike days will NOT take place next week.
As a result, there will be regular classes in all our schools as well as regular transportation and daycare services on December 1, 2 and 3rd.
Please note that teachers have voted in favor of holding the remaining three (3) strike days later on, if needed.  However, dates have yet to be announced.  As always, Unions would advise the Board seven (7) days prior to holding a legal strike.
As such, rest assured that I will keep you informed of any further development.
I thank you for your continued understanding and support during this negotiation period.

Mr. J. Wright - Nov. 18, 2015

Mr. Wright promised to do ‘something’ to his beard if the students raised over $1000.00 for Terry Fox (he had to shave it off last year!). Well today he dyed it RED FOR TERRY in front of the Cycle 3 students because the school raised $1218.75 for the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research. We will be posting the “Before During and After” shots on our twitter feed shortly.

Thanksgiving Lunch
Mr. J. Wright - Oct 06, 2015

http://www.lambtonshield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/happy-thanksgiving.jpg In keeping with a Dalkeith annual tradition. We are going to have our Dalkeith Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday, October 8th, 2015. We will be providing a hot turkey lunch to all students and staff and we will be eating as a school together in the gym. The school will be paying for this lunch, however, we are asking that all students bring some non-perishable food items (one or two) to help begin our Holiday Food Drive in exchange; therefore, please DO NOT send your child to school with a lunch, unless s/he has food allergies. However, a snack for recess would still be a good idea. Other than the lunch Thursday, it is a regular school day so the students should be in full dress code. It is not a dress down day, but the Dalkeith T-Shirts will be permitted outside of gym class. N.B. Lunch will be served at 11:30 for this event.

Menu: Roast Turkey and Gravy
Mashed Potatoes
Peas and Carrots
Oatmeal Galette
Juice

Terry Fox
Mr. J. Wright - Sept 28, 2015

Image result for Terry Fox logoOur annual Terry Fox Run will be taking place on Thursday, October 1st (alternate day the 2nd if there is going to be a deluge of rain). Please make certain the students are dressed for the activity. The students are permitted to wear their grey Dalkeith T-shirt but should dress in layers according to the forecast of that day. The students will be taking twelve laps of the school right before lunch (30-60min of run/walking) to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Last year we raised over $2000.00 and Mr. Wright had to shave his beard. Hopefully, we can raise more this year.

Corn Roast
Mr. J. Wright - Sept 14, 2015

The Corn Roast and Activity Afternoon will be taking place Friday September 18th (hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate).  It is important to note that the corn served DOES NOT replace their lunch or recess snack (i.e. lunch is as usual).  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
