About MIND High School
MIND High School, is an alternative public high school in Montreal operating under the English Montreal School Board (EMSB). Founded in 1975, MIND was created to offer a different approach to secondary education, one that prioritizes community, independence, and meaningful learning. The school also benefits from a long-standing partnership with McGill University’s Faculty of Education, supporting innovative teaching practices and reflective learning.
Our Vision
At MIND, our vision is to create a school where students feel valued, heard, and empowered. We believe education works best when students are active participants in their learning and in their school community. Our goal is to help students grow into thoughtful, responsible, and adaptable individuals who are prepared for post-secondary studies and for life beyond school.
We see the school as a shared space built on trust, mutual respect, and collaboration between students, teachers, and families.
Our Educational Philosophy
A Community-Based, Democratic Approach
MIND operates as a democratic learning community. Students, staff, and parents are encouraged to take part in discussions and decisions that shape school life. This shared responsibility helps students develop confidence, accountability, and a strong sense of belonging.
Independent and Critical Thinking
We place strong emphasis on critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Rather than memorization, students are encouraged to question ideas, explore multiple perspectives, and make meaningful connections across subjects. This approach supports lifelong learning and prepares students for an ever-changing world.
Individualized Learning
Small class sizes allow us to offer a personalized approach to education. Teachers work closely with students to adapt learning to individual strengths, interests, and goals. MIND is especially well suited for students who are motivated and who benefit from flexibility and close mentorship.
Academic Programs
Curriculum
MIND follows the Quebec Education Program (QEP) and meets all EMSB and Ministry of Education requirements. Students complete core subjects such as English, French, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences while engaging with the curriculum in alternative and creative ways.
Project-Based and Interdisciplinary Learning
Learning at MIND is often organized around projects that cross subject boundaries. These projects encourage collaboration, research, problem solving, and communication, helping students apply their learning to real-world contexts.
Enrichment and Experiential Learning
We actively seek partnerships with community organizations and professionals to enrich the student experience. These opportunities allow students to learn beyond the classroom through workshops, guest speakers, and hands-on initiatives.
Flexibility and Partnerships
MIND is committed to supporting diverse student pathways. One example is our partnership with the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, which allows eligible students to balance academic studies with professional artistic training. This flexibility reflects our belief that education should support the whole person.
Who We Serve
MIND is designed for students who:
- Learn best in small, supportive environments
- Are curious, motivated, and willing to take responsibility for their learning
- Value collaboration and open dialogue
- May not thrive in large, traditional school settings
Admission includes an interview process to ensure that the student’s learning style and expectations align with MIND’s philosophy.
Our Commitment
At MIND High School, we are committed to helping students move in new directions, academically, creatively, and personally. We strive to create a welcoming environment where difference is respected, voices are heard, and learning is meaningful.
