Who we serve

EMSB: Proposed (working) Definition

A student is considered gifted when he or she consistently demonstrates outstanding achievement, as evidence of exceptionally high capability with respect to intellect (at least two SD above the mean) OR high levels of achievement (as measured by Achievement Tests) in conjunction with high levels of creativity and task commitment (motivation) in at least one valuable area. Students who are gifted often demonstrate outstanding abilities in more than one area. The combination of the three sets of traits is brought to bear on general and specific performance areas, resulting in gifted behaviours (Renzulli’s Three Ring Model of Giftedness). Gifted learners may demonstrate extraordinary intensity of focus in their particular areas of talent or interest. However, they may also have accompanying disabilities and should not be expected to have strengths in all areas of intellectual functioning.

The definition builds on two pillars of the gifted programs, namely, to help these individuals achieve their high potential and to provide the society with educated professionals.
