In preparation for the holidays, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) once again teamed up with CTV Montreal for the annual “Spirit of Giving” campaign, which brought much needed assistance to the less fortunate throughout Montreal.

Non-perishable food, toys and miscellaneous items, such as soap and cleaning supplies, were collected, sorted and donated to The Donald Berman Chai Lifeline Canada, Share The Warmth, West Island Assistance Fund, Renaissance Montreal, Multicaf, Batshaw Youth and Family Services, Mile End Mission, La Mosaique, The Nazareth House and The Depot (Formerly NDG Food Depot). In all, the combined efforts of the EMSB, its schools and facilities generated over 1,000 boxes of non-perishable food, and over 50,000 toys and miscellaneous items.

For the first time in the history of the campaign, individual schools collected on behalf of individual charities. In total, more than 40 schools and centres took part in the campaign as well as some community organizations.

The following schools and centres participated in the campaign: James Lyng High School in St. Henri; Rosemount High School in Rosemount; St. Dorothy in St. Michel; Dalkeith Elementary in Anjou; Cedarcrest, Gardenview and Parkdale Elementary Schools, LaurenHill Academy and St. Laurent Adult Centre in St. Laurent; St. Monica and Willingdon Elementary Schools, Marymount Academy and Shadd Business Centre in N.D.G.; Coronation Elementary School in Cote-des-Neiges; Dunrae Gardens and Carlyle Elementary School in the Town of Mont-Royal; Roslyn Elementary in Westmount; Edinburgh and Elizabeth Ballantyne in Montreal West; Hampstead Elementary; Sinclair Laird in Park Extension; Michelangelo Elementary Schools in Riviere-des-Prairies; Merton Elementary School and Wagar Adult Education Centre in Côte St. Luc; John Caboto Academy and Our Lady of Pompei in Ahuntsic; John F. Pearson High School in Montreal North; Dante, Honoré Mercier, John Paul I High School, Laurier Macdonald High School as well as Laurier Macdonald Career Centre and the Facility des Grandes Prairies in St. Léonard.

Many of the participating EMSB schools organized a series of events set to encourage donations. Christine Long from CTV Montreal visited seven schools to feature how their students were getting into the spirit
