Hospital Opportunity Program for Students (HOPS)
The Hospital Opportunity Program for Students (HOPS) offers Secondary V students a unique opportunity to explore careers in healthcare through hands‑on observation in a large hospital setting. Organized by the Auxiliary of the Jewish General Hospital, the program allows students to observe and, when appropriate, assist medical professionals in a real clinical environment.
Students participate in hospital placements for half a day per week over two five‑week periods, gaining exposure to multiple departments and healthcare specialties.
Hospital Departments
HOPS placements vary from year to year based on availability. In previous years, students have rotated through departments such as:
- Acute Geriatrics
- Hemodialysis
- Cardiology
- Colorectal Surgery
- Emergency
- Neonatal Clinic
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Obstetrical Ultrasound
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Audiology
- Dental Clinic
- Dermatology Clinic
- Otolaryngology
- Vascular Thoracic
Due to the limited number of spaces in each department, students are not able to select specific placements. Departments are assigned by the program organizers.
Who Can Apply
The HOPS program is designed for Secondary V students who have a strong interest in healthcare and are prepared to commit fully to the program. Participation requires:
- Completion of all required documentation
- Attendance at all hospital rotations
- Attendance at evening lectures organized by the HOPS Committee
Students must be reliable, organized, and comfortable working in a professional environment.
How to Apply
Students interested in applying should:
- Speak with their guidance counsellor to obtain an application form
- Carefully read and complete the application
- Submit the completed form to their guidance counsellor
If a student’s application is submitted for consideration, they may be contacted for an interview with the HOPS Committee. Successful applicants will receive an acceptance letter with details regarding orientation at the Jewish General Hospital.
Important Information
Before beginning the program, students must:
- Obtain parental consent
- Inform their teachers in advance and agree on how missed tests or assignments will be completed
Students will complete:
- 10 hospital rotations
- 4 evening lectures held at the Jewish General Hospital
The primary goal of the program is to help students understand the general functioning of a hospital through observation and limited participation.
Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate of achievement.
