Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions (AEP 4770)

Program Objectives  

  • Equip students to deliver hygiene care, nutrition assistance, mobility support, and ensure client safety. 
  • Foster teamwork and effective communication skills. 
  • Develop capacity to build supportive client relationships.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist clients of all ages with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility to maintain or improve autonomy. 
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams in care planning and delivery, including palliative and end-of-life care.
  • Perform cleaning, disinfection, and proper storage of equipment and materials. Maintain a clean and safe environment.

Stage Requirements

  • Availability for either a day or evening internship (stage) schedule.
  • Daytime stage hours typically start between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and end between 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Evening stage hours typically start between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and end between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Additional Certifications

  • To ensure safety for both clients and workers in healthcare settings, students in this program are required to obtain the following certifications as part of their training:
  • Principles for the Safe Moving of People (PDSP) – Certified through ASSTSAS (Association paritaire pour la santé et la sécurité du travail du secteur affaires sociales), this training is essential for preventing workplace injuries and ensuring safe patient handling practices.
  • First Aid Certification – Delivered by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, this certification provides students with the knowledge and practical skills to respond to medical emergencies, including CPR and AED use, in compliance with national standards.

  • $395.00 (includes training and school materials; uniforms not included)

Admission Requirements  

To be eligible for admission to the Support for Assistive Services in Health and Social Services Institutions program leading to an STC, candidates must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Have obtained at least Secondary III credits or the equivalent in the language of instruction (LI), second language (SL), and mathematics;
  • OR hold an Attestation of Equivalence of Secondary Studies (AESS);
  • OR have passed the General Development Test (GDT) and the following specific prerequisites in the language of instruction: ENG 3101-1 and ENG 3102-2, or have been granted recognition for equivalent learning.
