An inspiring student of the month

For his remarkable courage, perseverance, and unwavering positivity in the face of tremendous challenges, Joey Sousa, a Grade 4 student at Pierre de Coubertin Elementary School in St. Leonard, has been selected as the EMSB Student of the Month for June.

Joey is known throughout his school community for his bright smile, kind heart, and boundless energy. A true social butterfly, he has a remarkable ability to make those around him feel welcome and valued. Whether he is participating in classroom activities, connecting with friends, or supporting his classmates, Joey consistently demonstrates kindness, empathy, and enthusiasm. His teachers and peers admire not only his curiosity and creativity, but also the positive spirit he brings to every situation.

Beyond the classroom, Joey is an accomplished competitive figure skater who has achieved impressive success at a young age. Ranked among Quebec's top 10 skaters under the age of nine, he has earned recognition for his dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence. He is also a proud member of a synchronized skating team that has achieved multiple podium finishes. Through countless hours of training and practice, Joey has demonstrated the determination and work ethic required to excel both as an individual athlete and as a supportive teammate.

Last summer, Joey's life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with leukemia. What followed was an incredibly challenging journey of treatments, hospital visits, and recovery. Despite the physical and emotional obstacles that accompanied his diagnosis, Joey has approached every stage of his treatment with extraordinary courage and resilience. His strength of character has inspired not only his family but also teachers, classmates, and members of the wider school community.

Joey has already completed several phases of chemotherapy and successfully achieved remission. Most recently, he completed his immunotherapy treatment and has now entered the maintenance phase of his recovery. Throughout this journey, he has continued to demonstrate a level of determination and optimism well beyond his years. His ability to face adversity with such grace and positivity serves as a powerful example to everyone who knows him.

Although Joey is not yet able to return to school in person, he remains closely connected to his classmates, teachers, and friends. The Pierre de Coubertin community continues to support and encourage him, while Joey's love of learning and strong school spirit remain as evident as ever. His resilience has become a source of inspiration for others, reminding everyone that challenges can be met with courage, hope, and perseverance.

Joey's story is one of strength, hope, and determination. Through every obstacle, he has continued to move forward with a positive outlook and an unwavering spirit.
