EMSB Thanks its Volunteers
The annual English Montreal School Board Parent Volunteer Appreciation Evening was scheduled to take place on April 20th at Buffet Amiens in St. Léonard during National Volunteer Week. It has been cancelled again due to the pandemic and guidelines set in place by the Government. The EMSB has decided to honor its many volunteers via a virtual event under the theme, “Volunteers... Working Together to Meet the Challenge.” At the virtual event Volunteer of Distinction Mary Nitti from Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary School in Rosemount will be recognized. She is a caring and devoted volunteer who works tirelessly at the school to ensure that students are nourished and cared for. We are happy to announce that this year Ms. Jamie Orchard will be honored as ambassador of the year. Jamie has been a longtime emcee of the event and is a parent of EMSB students.
The event will go live on Tuesday, April 20th with messages from the Chair of the EMSB, Mr. Joe Ortona, the interim Director General, Ms. Pela Nickoletopoulos, the Chair of the Parents’ Committee, Ms Caleigh Saucier and title sponsor La Capitale.
The EMSB has more than 1,500 wonderful volunteers who continue their good work at the schools even though this year has proven to be a challenge by finding alternative ways of volunteering.
Instead of lunch buffets served by parents for teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, it’s lovingly assembled individually boxed lunches, or gifts and cards delivered to the school. Rather than convening in the staff lunchroom for monthly parent meetings, it’s sitting at the kitchen table after dinner to meet via videoconferencing. What stands out in the parent volunteering community this pandemic year is the heartfelt will to continue to help out and stay connected with their children’s schools.
