FACE gets new governing board structure and Principal for English side

Montreal - Thursday, August 13, 2020

At a special board meeting presided by trustee Marlene Jennings yesterday, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) adopted a resolution to approve the establishment of a new Governing Board, as well as creation a new position of School Principal at FACE (Fine Arts Core Education) School located in downtown Montreal. This school has been managed jointly by the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM) and the EMSB since 1998.

Following the resolution adopted by the EMSB, the two organizations will work jointly to revise the protocol established by the  EMSB and the CSSDM  with the aim of ensuring the continuity of FACE's unique educational project. It is important to stress that this decision will be made in maintaining the educational services offered to students, while respecting the essential components of the curriculum and the Education Act

"These important decisions come after many discussions with our counterparts at CSSDM, with whom we share common responsibilities at FACE School,” said EMSB Trustee Marlene Jennings. “Our goal is both to strengthen the overall governance structure of the school, as well as to reinforce our strong commitment to the bright future of FACE.”

“The CSSDM has always considered the educational project of FACE to be a very important one and has accordingly put in place the necessary conditions to make this unique-purpose school a stimulating learning environment for all students,” said CSSDM Director General Robert Gendron. “Given the decision of the EMSB to ensure the management of educational activities for English-speaking students, we wish to underline our full collaboration in order to allow reflection on the sustainability of this project, in collaboration with all stakeholders in the field.”

It should be noted that the establishment of the  new governing board is imminent and will be formed in time for the new school year. School governing boards are made up of the principal, parents, teachers, representatives of non-teaching professionals and support staff, as well as community representatives who work in partnership. All work in the best interests of the students so that they have the best possible learning opportunities. The powers and functions of the governing board relate to four areas: general, educational services, community services, and physical and financial resources.

The adoption of this resolution would also allow those elected to the EMSB FACE School governing board to be candidate as a member of the new board of directors of a school service center this fall, in the event that the Law amending mainly the Education Act with regard to school organization and governance (Bill 40) was to come into force with regard to English-language school boards in Quebec.
