Dress Code and Appearance

Cleanliness, good grooming, and appropriate attire are essential to maintaining a positive learning environment. John F. Kennedy High School has established a simple and clear Dress Code to support this goal. Students are expected to follow the guidelines below. For pricing information, visit School Fees page.

School Dress Code

Required Tops
  • Solid white, loose-fitting polo shirt with a collar or a solid white shirt
  • No logos permitted
  • Applies to both boys and girls
Required Bottoms
  • Solid black, loose-fitting pants (boys and girls)
  • Solid black skirts (girls; skirts must be no more than 1" above the knee)
  • Black jeans are acceptable
Outerwear & Footwear
  • JFK school hoodies
  • Plain white hoodies
  • Sensible footwear must be worn at all times

The dress code applies during travel to and from school, during the school day, and on all school outings or functions unless otherwise stated.


Not Permitted

  • Tights of any kind
    • Includes “dressy” tights with zippers or pockets
  • Joggers
  • Clothing that is frayed, patched, worn, or torn
  • Headwear worn indoors (unless for religious reasons)
    • Baseball caps, hats, tuques, hoods, or bandannas will be confiscated and sent to Administration
  • Chains or jewelry with emblems or symbols that may be considered offensive
  • Excessive jewelry of any kind
  • Jackets and scarves in the classroom
    • These items are only to be worn when entering or exiting the building

The purpose of the Dress Code is to promote good taste and ensure attire is appropriate for an academic setting.


Physical Education Dress Code

The following items are mandatory for Phys. Ed. classes:

  • JFK Phys. Ed. shorts
  • JFK Phys. Ed. T-shirt
  • Plain black track pants, jogging pants, or yoga pants
    • No other colors permitted
    • Pants may have white stripes only down the side

Enforcement

Discussions regarding inappropriate dress or appearance will be handled individually by the Administration. The Administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes proper interpretation of the Dress Code.

Dress Code rules will be strictly enforced. Failure to comply is considered insubordination and may result in serious consequences, including:

  • Detentions
  • Being sent home to change
  • Suspension
